In 1931 the U.S. adopted “The Star Spangled Banner” as its national anthem. The nation was a very different place then. Clearly it’s time for a new anthem.
The music for the song is not original. It was “borrowed” from the official song of a British gentlemen’s club. It’s known as being very hard to sing.
More importantly, the lyrics came from a poem by a white slaveholder named Francis Scott Key. The little-known subsequent verse derides slaves that fought for their freedom by joining the British. That’s right, it doesn’t praise human beings that fought for their freedom – it derides them.
Let’s get our most talented artists – people like Beyonce, Jay Z, Nelly, Diddy, Ice Cube and others – to gather together and compose a new anthem that celebrates freedom for all Americans.
